History

The construction contract for the boat was on the 2nd February 1935 to the German works Kiel awarded. The keel was laid on the 11th of February 1935, the launch on 19 July 1935, the putting under Lieutenant Hans Meckel finally found 6 August 1935 instead.

The boat was one of the first submarines, after the Anglo-German Naval Agreement was placed on the user. After commissioning on 6 August 1935 was the boat from August 1935 until 30 June 1940. Education Association as a school boat for the U-school or school-submarine flotilla From September 1939 to October 1939 was during the Polish campaign , and from March 1940 to April 1940 during the company Weserübung used as a front boat. From 1 July 1940 it came to its decommissioning on 1 August 1944 to the 21st Flotilla to Pillau . Later it was to Neustadt in Holstein transferred. There it was for noise and shock absorption tests against water bombs used.

Usage Statistics

First patrol

The boat ran on 4 September 1939 at 20.00 clock from Wilhelmshaven and expired on 8 September 1939 at 8.10 clock back in Wilhelmshaven. On this five-day company in the North Sea no ships were sunk.

Second war patrol

The boat ran on 13 September 1939 at 12.40 clock ran out from Wilhelmshaven and 23 September 1939 at 13.15 clock back in Wilhelmshaven. In this twelve-day things before Terschelling no ships were sunk.

Third war patrol

The boat ran on 27 September 1939 at 12.20 clock ran out from Wilhelmshaven and on 3 October 1939 at 16.00 clock in Kiel one. Permanent on these seven days and 145 nm and 90 nm over long under water company before Norway two ships were sunk with 2348 BRT:

  • 30th September 1939: the sinking of the Danish steamer Vendia with 1,150 GRT. The steamer was by a torpedo sunk. He drove in ballast and was on his way from Faaborg to the River Clyde . There were eleven dead and six survivors.

  • First October 1939: the sinking of the Swedish steamer Gun with 1198 GT. The steamer was sunk by a torpedo. He was carrying 50 tonnes of ammunition and was on his way from Gothenburg to Antwerp . There were eleven deaths.

During this patrol, the British submarine shot H-34 on 30 September 1939 15 nautical miles north of Kinnaird Head two torpedoes on U 3 . Both torpedoes missed their target.

Fourth war patrol

The boat ran on 16 March at 8.00 clock ran in 1940 from Kiel and 29 March, 1940 23.20 clock in Wilhelmshaven one. Constant on this fortnight and about 970 nm long and 126 nm in water over things before Norway were no ships sunk.

Fifth war patrol

The boat ran on 11 April 1940 at 23.55 clock ran out from Wilhelmshaven and 19 April 1940 at 10.33 clock back in Wilhelmshaven. During this patrol, the British submarine shot HMS Porpoise on 16 April 1940 10 nautical miles south-west of Egersund (Norway) six torpedoes at U 3 . The crew of the British torpedo boat heard a detonation, and believed the submarine U 1 to have sunk. The torpedo detonation however, came from a German-G7a torpedo that the Porpoise had been shot, missed the target and exploded at the end of the run course. U 3 was not damaged in the attack.

Fate

U 3 on 1 August 1944 in Gdynia initially decommissioned. In March 1945, ran U 3 of Gdynia with refugees from the west. In Świnoujście , some or all of the refugees were unloaded, then with the Europe drove west.
On 3 May 1945, the boat was in Neustadt in Holstein by the British, the only practical vorfanden the boat torso captured, in 1945 and scrapped . The position was 54 ° 7 '  N , 10 ° 50 '  O .
